Southwest School of Art Wedding – Adriana & Tom

By | Weddings | No Comments

One of my favorite wedding venues in San Antonio is the Southwest School of Art. It offers a beautiful setting for a special event that won’t soon be forgotten whether you want outdoors, indoors, or a combination of the two. Every wedding we’ve done at SSA has been unique, and I think that’s part of why I love it so much. Adriana & Tom live in Seattle, far away from either of their families, so they decided to plan a destination wedding in San Antonio and they wanted it to be fun and relaxed… what a perfect place for a chill wedding, in the beautiful courtyards of the Southwest School of Art.

Of course, mother nature couldn’t make the day tooooo relaxed, so there was quite a lot of rain, but we waited it out and were rewarded with the most beautiful light you could ever hope for. I captured some of my top favorite ceremony images at Adriana & Tom’s wedding, not just because of the gorgeous light, but because of all the joy and laughter, the happy tears and sweet moments.

I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed creating them. Congratulations, Adriana & Tom, and thank you once again for entrusting to capture these special memories.

That’s right… more Joshua Tree photos with Mirelle! Remember the teaser I posted about the upcoming desert portraits with that red dress? There’s a lot more where that came from.

I’ll be posting the 4th and final part of this series tomorrow, so stay tuned!

King Williams Backyard Wedding – Cristal & Patrick

By | Weddings | No Comments

Small, intimate weddings have a special place in my heart. Cristal & Patrick decided to have their family-focused wedding at their home in the historic King Williams district in San Antonio, TX. There were less than 20 guests and nearly half of them were children. The day included an early afternoon ceremony followed by lunch while mariachis played nearby, a bit of piñata smashing, a siesta (hanging out at the pool or going down the street to their BNB for a nap), and then a private chef from Austin prepared dinner and put on a bit of a show.

This wedding was published in San Antonio Magazine (view the online version).

Joshua Tree Portraits: Part 2

By | Portraits | No Comments

After shooting with Mirelle for a little bit in the wee hours of the morning, we went back to the AirBNB to cool off and goof around taking some chill photos in the house. The place had so much character that we had to put it to good use for some casual / silly shots. After cooling off a little and hydrating we went back out into the desert to shoot a little more.

Stay tuned for even more tomorrow. 🙂

Joshua Tree Portraits: Part 1

A few weeks ago I was in California for a few days and had the privilege of photographing Mirelle for a day. We had a blast, ate some delicious pizza, and ended up with so much portrait magic that I’m going to split it up into a multi-part blog post so as not to overwhelm. Hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed creating them. More to come tomorrow!

Death Valley & Joshua Tree National Park (Sneak Peek)

By | Editorial, Portraits | No Comments

I just got back a few days ago from a really cool trip with a few shoots in California, starting in Los Angeles, then driving up to Death Valley and then swinging back around to Joshua Tree National Park. I shot primarily film, so it’s going to be a couple of weeks before I get those shots back, but I figured I would post a little bit of a teaser in the meantime.

As we got closer to Death Valley, there was this cool Catholic Church, St. John’s the Baptist, with some mountains as a backdrop and a few palm trees to keep it company. How could I not stop for a picture? Little did I know the little road I turned off to get the shot was actually a tiny airport. No doubt somebody was watching me and wondering why this idiot was driving a Ford Fusion onto a runway – to my credit there were no signs and once I realized it I parked off the side of the runway before plopping down to get the shot. Had to hold my reflector up in front of me to shade the lens since I didn’t want a lens-flared look.

The main objective that evening was to get a great sunset panoramic for my running series which can be seen in the Fine-Art Panoramic Landscape Photographs section of my website. While waiting for the light to be where I wanted it, I met Stuart from Scotland who was taking an epic road-trip all over the USA with his dad and brother. Here he is checking out the landscape at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California… then a photograph of me behind-the-scenes getting setup for my panoramic sunset image.

What do you do when you’re in a part of the USA with some of the darkest sky you can find? Well you go out and shoot some astrophotographs (nightscapes) of course! I didn’t really pack my gear with the intention of doing this, so there was only one spot that I thought worked well, not to mention it’s sort of hard to find more good spots in pitch black darkness!

Back to Joshua Tree for a little bridal session action! Didn’t shoot any of this on digital but my assistant managed to capture a BTS shot on their phone. Can’t wait to get the film back!!

If you’ve never been, Joshua Tree National Park is a pretty cool place. And there are suuuuper-cool Airbnb options if you want to stay somewhere with lots of style and character. (I also took some film shots of the interior of the place we stayed… didn’t do any exterior though.)

Alright, last image for this post… Does Mirelle look amazing in this red dress out in Joshua Tree, or what? We had so much fun, and there was this really nice breeze the whole time so it wasn’t even really that hot, considering it’s a desert.

Stay tuned for more in the weeks to come!

Brooklyn Wedding First Look – Teaser

By | Weddings | No Comments

It was so much fun to be a part of Keri & Justin’s New York wedding, well to be more specific, their Brooklyn wedding. Their ceremony was at the St. Charles Borromeo Church and reception at The Glasserie – but you’ll have to wait to see the goodies from the rest of their day. This is just a quickie post to share one of my favorite things about weddings, the first look!

Keri took some convincing that she should see her groom before the ceremony, but as has always been the case for our brides, she was so happy she did. Doing a first look isn’t just about having an opportunity for great portraits in beautiful light, it’s about having some time in [relative] private with the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with, on your crazy hectic wedding day. It’s such a special moment when you see each other in private instead of in front of a hundred or more friends and family… you can tell your bride how gorgeous she looks and how excited you are to be marrying her, you can embrace… it really changes the mood in a beautiful way and puts the couple at ease. And then there’s the fact that you get to enjoy cocktail hour with the friends and family who have come from near and far to see you!

First looks are awesome, and pretty much everyone should seriously consider doing it for their wedding. We chose a location near where they wanted to do bridal party portraits that we felt would be private, feel like NY, and would make for timeless images. Now look at these two beautiful love birds.
