Finding an Audience

The concept of audience is one of the most difficult ones to come to terms with for artists and photographers. In fact, finding and defining an audience is one of the most difficult aspects of doing art.

There’s a very interesting (and long) column over at Luminous-Landscape about finding your audience as an artist. Some compelling arguments are made, particularly point # 7: How to Create a Best Seller. Two options are presented: create specifically for your audience, or create in order to indulge yourself as an artist.

Personally, I prefer the latter. I can’t really say yet which way works best, since I’m just now moving towards getting exposure to my photography and selling prints, etc… but then again, I’m not making my living from my photography, so I can indulge myself without fear of going broke.
